II CoreManagementWorkshop

Welcome to Universidade do Algarve

The workshop is an international venue aimed at managers and staff of research core facilities (microscopy, flow cytometry, genomics, sequencing, proteomics, histology, animal house, etc.), to discuss and develop better ways to manage and run facilities for science, to solve technical, scientific, and management problems, and to establish collaborations by networking with peers. Managers, core staff, and industrial partners are all invited to participate.

This workshop follows from the first "Core Management Workshop” organized by Nuno Moreno and Rui Gardner, from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, that took place in July 12-13, 2012It was attended by many international experts in several core areas, having been highly participative and generating informative and heated discussions on core management. The enthusiasm generated was such that, at the end of the workshop, most participants felt that it would be beneficial to have this meeting annually and taking place in different locations.

About DCBM/University of Algarve

The University of Algarve, bearing in mind the necessity of forming more medical doctors in Portugal, created recently, in 2009, the new Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine (DCBM) to direct the new degree in Medicine using Problem Based teaching methods.

In support for the researchers involved in the teaching and activities of the DCBM,  a set of new infrastructures was also created supporting research of the Regenerative Medicine Program. It is also provided research equipment as well as specialized technical personnel running those infrastructures. This way the DCBM has currently several Research Units: Cytometry, Tissue Culture, Cell Imaging, Gene Expression, Animal House and Live Animal Imaging. These core facilities were created to provide the best quality services to researchers inside and outside the DCBM, and efforts are made for their continuous development and optimization. One such effort is to continuously train the technical staff.

This two-day workshop will consist of expert talks, a few commercial presentations, an informal poster session at the end of day one, and a round-table discussion at the end of the workshop.

All applicants are invited to submit a poster abstract, either scientific, technical or a simple overview of their facility. The aim is to foster discussion on the different strategies each Core Facility uses to provide the best possible service. If you wish to submit a poster abstract, please send it to us by email. A limited number of abstracts will be selected as oral presentations following author's agreement.

Core Facility Managers and staff in general, including Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, Genomics, Sequencing, Proteomics, Histology, Animal House, etc.) etc.
