Portuguese Electron Microscopy Technical Meetings

In 2016 The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência Electron Microscopy Facility hosted the 1st Portuguese Electron Microscopy Technical Meeting on October 28th. The topic of the day was the preparation of TEM grids. The schedule included a theoretical discussion followed by hands-on practical sessions. The goal of this initial meeting was to bring together all the collective tips and tricks of the EM Community, helping experienced laboratories improve their skills, and developing laboratories expand their skills. The IGC team demonstrated our approach to grid selection, formvar film making and carbon coating and we appreciated the additional input from the community, particularly Andreia Pinto from the Instituto de Medicina Molecular. The 2016 meeting was such a success, that the community agreeded to continue with the workshops.

In 2017 the 2nd meeting was hosted at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) on June 27. The theme of the day was application of histochemical techniques in the different phases of electron microscopy sample procesing.

In 2018 the 3rd meeting was hosted by Andreia Pinto at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM) and co-organized with Ana Farinho from the Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC) on October 4th. The theme of the day was sample handling and targeting.

In 2019 the 4th meeting was hosted by Mónica Zuzarte at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, on November 11. The theme of the day was sample preparation and imaging by SEM.

The Next Meeting will be Friday, December 4th, 2020 at i3S in Porto.
